About this event
The lecture will focus on one of Kippenberger's less known but perhaps most important conceptual projects: MOMAS: The Museum of Modern Art, on the island of Syros, Greece. A museum without walls, which appropriated the incomplete building of an unfinished slaugtherhouse, it had no budget, no collection, hardly any resources except Kippenberger as its founder, curator, director, and producer. During its short duration (1993-96), MOMAS hosted a number of unexpected projects by well-known artists, all friends of Kippenberger, raising key issues about the function and role of the museum, as well as that of the artist. The lecture will focus on the function, meaning and symbolic value of this 'unlikely museum', and relate it to some of Kippenberger's other conceptual and socially oriented projects.
